Dichloromethane: Although a bit toxic, it can absorb all kinds of rivers

Dichloromethane Overview

From 2014 to 2019, domestic dichloromethane consumption maintained an overall growth trend. Although public health events have had a significant impact on the global economy since 2020, domestic dichloromethane consumption has declined significantly as a whole. However, in 2021, the economy will gradually recover, the chemical industry will enter a prosperous upward cycle, and the demand for dichloromethane will gradually recover.

Properties and characteristics of dichloromethane

Dichloromethane is a colorless, transparent, and volatile liquid. Due to its strong solubility and low toxicity, it is widely used in film production, medicine, refrigeration liquid manufacturing, and other industries.

Dichloromethane application field

Industrial applications

In manufacturing, chemical and other industries, dichloromethane is widely used in the manufacture of security film, polycarbonate, etc., and the rest is used as a coating solvent, metal degreaser, aerosol sprayer, polyurethane blowing agent, mold release agent, paint remover.

Dichloromethane is also used in grain fumigation and refrigeration of low pressure freezers and air conditioning units. It is used as an auxiliary blowing agent in the production of polyether-type ureane foam, and as a blowing agent for extruded polysulfone-type foam.

Applications in the cosmetics industry

In the cosmetics industry, carbomer is often used as an emulsifier in emulsions, creams, and gels. Due to the strong carcinogenicity of benzene and the good solubility of dichloromethane, raw material producers use dichloromethane instead of benzene as a production aid for carbomer. Therefore, dichloromethane is also in high demand in the cosmetics industry.

Applications in the field of medicine

In the field of medicine, dichloromethane is mostly used as a reaction medium for the preparation of antibiotics such as ampicillin, hydroxylbenzylpenicillin, and pianormycin.

In addition, dichloromethane is mainly used as a solvent in the pharmaceutical process, and is also used as an active substance extractant for many drugs, replacing flammable ether and petroleum ether as an extractant for fats, oils and other substances. It can also be used as a diluent for high vapor pressure propellants.

And because dichloromethane is very toxic and wakes up quickly after poisoning, it can be used as an anesthetic (such as a dental local anesthetic).

Application examples in the field of medicine

Preparation of Tazobactam

During the deprotection process, tazobactam 3,5-dinitrobenzyl ester was dissolved in dichloromethane and reacted with hydrogen. After the reaction, dichloromethane was used to recover 3,5-dinitrotoluene.

Synthesis of oxiracetam

The preparation of 2- (3-ethoxyformyl-4-hydroxypyrrolidine-2-ketone-1-yl) ethyl acetate, 2- (4-hydroxypyrrolidine-2-ketone-1-yl) ethyl acetate, and the final synthesis stage of oxiracetam require dichloromethane solvent as the reaction medium or purification of the product.

Preparation of Leupropirelin Acetate Microspheres

Dichloromethane is used to dissolve PLGA.

Safe use and product recommendations

It can be seen that although dichloromethane is only a small solvent in the field of medicine, its strong solubility and low toxicity also make it popular. However, in the work, it is still necessary to pay attention to protection when using dichloromethane to avoid poisoning and prevent leakage.

Finally, CG's pharmaceutical grade dichloromethane is recommended. It is produced in full compliance with GMP conditions, meets European Pharmacopoeia standards, and has a low impurity content. And all CG products can provide third-party audit reports, which will better support the integrity of your quality management system!
